Spied! 2012 Mercedes-Benz SL Caught on the Street

   Back in January, we caught the 2012 Mercedes-Benz SL out winter testing. Now that the temperature is starting to rise again, the SL test mule has shed some of that pesky camouflage—revealing a car that looks pretty much ready for its big debut in Frankfurt. What’s still apparent are the changes made to the front end, showing off a larger grille with bigger three-pointed star emblem, redesigned headlights and a generally flatter-looking front fascia. What we couldn’t see last time that’s clearly visible now is the outline of LED running lights, a trend that’s become commonplace on many Mercedes models. Since all-LED headlights recently made an appearance on the SLK, we can expect that technology to make its way to the SL as well.

Both the rocker panels and convertible hardtop were left completely uncovered, revealing that characteristic silver paint underneath all that camo. While it’s tough to see, the roof of this SL looks to have a lot of glass. This could suggest a glass roof like the one used for the SLK’s Magic Sky Control system, which can lighten or darken depending on how much sunshine you want to let in. The taillights are also more visible this time, and show that the lamps are a bit wider than the current model’s with possibly more of a slant to them. Dual exhaust pipes are molded into the rear bumper, but are sadly obscured by shadow in these photos.
Things are coming together for the new SL, but that upright nose, like the one found on the SLK, might take a little getting used to. We’re not sure if this is the sleekest the SL has looked in past years, but we’ll reserve judgment until the car is fully revealed at the Frankfurt show.

Mercedes-Benz E63 Wagon Returning to U.S.A.

2011.05.11A forum member over at BenzBoost.com claims to have obtained a leaked copy of the model year 2012 Mercedes-Benz E-Class dealer ordering guide, revealing a few surprises.

 Not only does the guide confirm the updated E350 and E550 engines we reported on last week, but it appears that after a two-year absence from the States, the E63 AMG wagon will join the already confirmed E63 sedan for the 2012 model year. The wagon will also receive AMG’s new 5.5-liter turbocharged V8 rated at 518 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque. And not only will the new AMG wagon haul more cargo than the sedan, but it should haul it faster; our past 0-60 mph tests of previous-generation AMG E-classes reveal that the wagon is usually 0.1 to 0.2 seconds faster than the sedan. How? Because the wagon has just enough additional weight in the rear to help the tires grip better and transfer all that power to the ground. The ordering guide estimates a 4.1 second 0-60 time for the sedan and 4.3 for the wagon, but OEM test results tend to be on the conservative side.
The ordering guide also states that the E550 will only be available in a 4Matic (four-wheel drive) variant for both the sedan and wagon. We’re not sure why, but we expect to get an explanation closer to its launch this coming fall 2011 (same goes for the E63 wagon).

The car wears the same 6.3 litre V8 engine as the Coupe, and with the AMG Speedshift DCT 7-speed sports transmission in attendance, offers comparable performance – the 571 hp and 650 Nm on call offers a 0-100 kph sprint time of 3.8 seconds and an electronically-limited 315 kph top speed.

Single-tone or two-tone designo leather in espresso brown is available as a new interior colour – this dark shade of brown matches an optional new metallic paint finish called AMG Sepang brown. Leather-lined roll-over bars with integrated mesh in a “Silver Shadow” look are available with the optional designo Exclusive leather, and ambient lighting is integrated into the optionally available, electrically folding exterior mirrors.
Other available options include the Airscarf system, integrated into the backrests of the AMG sports seats, and a Bang & Olufsen BeoSound AMG surround sound system, as well as an Android-based AMG Performance Media system, replete with vehicle telemetric data displays and high-speed mobile internet access.
